NORA STEPHENS is a dance artist and educator who has spent much of her professional career in Brooklyn or abroad. She recently moved to Cambridge, MA after over a decade in Brooklyn, NY. Most recently, Nora has performed with Lynn Modell, collaborated with Ana Harmon and is currently collaborating with performer MacKenzie LeTorre and visual artist Kate Holcomb Hale. Since in Boston, her work has been shown at the Dance Complex, The Foundry, both in Cambridge, MA and at the Danforth Museum in Framingham and at Praise Shadows Art Gallery in Brookline, MA.

Her dance works have been presented in NYC at Gibney Dance as part of Work Up, Danspace Project as part of Draftworks, the 92nd St. Y’s Fridays at 12noon series, Center for Performance Research (CPR), The Brooklyn Museum, in DancenOw/NYC, at Movement Research at the Judson Church, Dixon Place, THROW at the Chocolate Factory Theater and with AUNTS among others. In January 2017, Nora was an Artist-in-Residence at Chez Bushwick starting developments on a new work, Untitled Together.



From 2009-2012, Nora was based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where her work was presented at the Museu de Arte Moderno (MAM), Barracão Maravilha Gallery,  the art events Ocupação and Contrabanda and at Rampa, Lugar de Criação. She initiated and organized the Arte ao Vivo, Rio ao Vivo performance art festival, funded by the World Dance Alliance-Americas, which included workshops and over 15 performances in venues spanning the city in July 2011.  

Nationally, her dances have been performed in Boston, MA., Philadelphia, PA, Mt. Tremper, NY and Madison, WI and other international cities include Mexico City, Vienna, and Berlin. As a performer, she has had the fortune of working with Juliette Mapp, Rebecca Davis, Deborah Hazler (Vienna) and currently with Emily Wexler and Kim Brandt.  

 

Her video works have been screened/installed at the Brooklyn Public Library in Brooklyn, NY, the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, Le Quinto Festival Internacional de Video Danza in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at the Garrison Art Center in Garrison, NY.

In 2008 Nora completed her MFA in Dance as part of the Hollins University/American Dance Festival program under Donna Faye Burchfield. She received a BS in Dance with a Certificate in InterArts and Technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
